Why I Don’t Like “Beginner” Classes

We all have to start somewhere! I totally get that; but, we like to stay where we are comfortable. If you have ever started at a new gym, you know it can suck being out

We all have to start somewhere! I totally get that; but, we like to stay where we are comfortable. If you have ever started at a new gym, you know it can suck being out of your comfort zone, you don’t know where anything is, all the machines are a little different and you don’t know anyone there. After a while you finally get brave and try a new class. You go in the room, stare at what everyone else is doing and get the equipment they are getting. All while trying to avoid eye contact with the instructor in the hopes they don’t realize you are new. Class starts and you either love it or you hate it. When you love it, it becomes your go to class, you like the instructor, the music, the people, the time it all plays a part in why you go.

Now let’s say you went to a beginner class…

You go to class, you learn a lot of exercises modified for you, and over time the class isn’t challenging enough. You stop seeing the changes in your body you were seeing before. You stop progressing toward your goals, and you start to get discouraged. After all you are working out 3 days a week at your Favorite class!! And Why would you change classes, the times aren’t what you are used to, the people are new the instructor is new, the music is new and we are right back in our uncomfortable place we started (another discouraging moment)

Now, let’s say you went to a class for all levels…

You go to class, you learn how to modify all exercises (including burpees, didn’t know you could level burpees beyond not doing the push-up… or maybe you did, lol), the instructor gets to know you and starts to challenge you to push to a harder level of modification as they notice they are to easy. You keep getting stronger, you keep making progress toward your goals, you feel motivated and empowered. No need to change class, no need to find a different time to workout and when you go to another class you know how to modify exercises to your level!

So next time you are looking for a class, take the time to meet your instructor, let them know who you are and any modification needs you may have. I promise, we WANT TO KNOW! What’s your Favorite Class or workout?
